The client, a prominent Wellington developer, presented the opportunity for Custance to modernise this old paper factory, with two to three floors of new apartments over the existing structure. Careful design was key to ensuring that the exterior of the building unified the new structure above, while respecting the existing heritage building below. The resulting structure and mass provided the building with a strong presence to the street.
With a thin, north facing façade, thermally efficient spaces were a natural outcome, and the resulting 28 apartments are warm, quiet, and highly sought after. Living rooms span the full depth of the building, with glazed walls to decks front and back, allowing through ventilation, with interiors crisply modern, and completely open plan to maximise internal space. Colour plays an important part in unifying the new structure with the heritage building below.
